Studio Space at Arts Incubator

Here is a shot of my studio space at Arts Incubator in Kansas City, MO.  There is a little room to show some of my work and a place to store materials and tools.

I have been here since March of this year. Besides this space, the organization has a wood and metal shop, also a printmaking studio. I have been expanding on the type of work I have  been doing due to the additional facilities. One of the projects I started was to put in a peephole on one of my outside walls. People walking by can view a little peep show. I have set up a couple of different situations. Here is a shot taken through the peephole of this months show. This is a juxtaposition of a photo transparency  in front of a cartoon playing in the background. The cartoon is Farkleberry Farm by Bazillion Pictures.

As the cartoon plays, the moving colors alter the photo image in front.

I sort of see this peephole project as an experimental space to try out new media. I am also working on a “mobile unit” peepshow that can travel outside my studio space. More to come about that later.

Artwork from the “Locator” show

Here are six pieces from my show at the Kansas City Art Institute in May 2009. These are kiln fired glass panels with inclusions. There were 14 pieces in the show.

"mass ascension 3, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 2009"

The size of these glass panels are 14″ x 10″ x .25″.

"prairie grasses, Kansas, 2009"

I use Bullseye glass for the panels.  Besides the glass pieces, I insert non-glass materials called inclusions. These materials are fired into the glass. The inclusions are ceramic pigments , thinfire fiber paper, underglaze ceramic pencil, and copper wire.  The piece above has all these elements in it.

"trees, English Landing, Parkville, Missouri, 2009"

I began with a digital photographic image. This is converted into a ceramic pigment print. The print is then transferred to a sheet of glass and fired, to fuse it to the glass.

Smaller glass pieces of sheet glass and frit (crushed glass) are added  prior to the full fuse firing.
